Running on the Des Plaines River trail North

Running in the forest preserve is a great way to reduce the pounding on your legs that runners often experience from pavement. The numbers marked to the left do not stand for miles, but rather turn around points on the trail starting from the parking lot path entrance by Maine South across from the pond (shown by the arrow) If you go past Algonquin, the trail continues all the way to Big Bend Lake. See below for distances and other notes.

1 - (Touhy) .7 miles there, 1.4 miles round trip.
2- ("Toakton", halfway from Touhy to Oakton, recognized by the 294 bridge.) approx. 1.5 miles, about 3 miles round trip.
3. (Oakton) almost 2 miles there, about 4 miles round trip.
4. (Algonquin parking lot) 2.5 miles there, 5 round trip.
Note: there is a water pump at this spot.
things to keep in mind
If you are planning on going 6 miles, take the right branch of the trail instead of turning left for the Algonquin stop (#4). You will need to cross Algonquin and run in the bike lane past the Methodist camp ground on the right side of the street before continuing and (carefully) transitioning to the other side of the street, which will lead you back down by the river and on to the rest of the trail.
After extreme rain the Des Plaines river may experience flooding, resulting in closure of the trail.
never run/bike in the woods by yourself - always bring a friend
